Karat and Carat
How many times we hear "my ring is 14 Karat Gold" or " my Stone is 2 Carat". Well confusion may arise. To clear it, better to know that KARAT - referred to Gold - is a measure of Gold purity, (1000/1000 means pure, 1000 parts of Gold or 24 Karat. Once Gold is alloyed, say 750/1000, it means that 750 part is Gold the rest (25%) alloy, so can be referred as 18 Karat (18 out of 24 or 75% Gold). Gold 14 Karat means out of 24 Karat, 14 are Gold and 10 alloy, Gold 9 Karat means out of 24 Karat, 9 are Gold and 13 alloy or (37.5% Gold).
The higher the Karat, the more gold, more purity and greater weight as Gold is very heavy, Specific gravity 17 compared to 11.5 of Lead!!!
CARAT, is basically a measure of weight, used to grade Precious Stones. 5 Carats equals to 1 metric gram. So if you have a 2.5 Carat stone, it means the Stone weight 0.5 grams or 2.5 Carat.
Interestingly the unit Carat comes from the name Carob, a seed that has been used for centuries to determine the weight/size of stones as the Carob seeds are remarkably constant in size and weight. The Carob ( Ceratonia Siliqua) is a small tree of the pea family. It produces a Carob bean long and flat containing the hard Carob seeds. More interestingly the pulp of the Carob bean was and is still used as a Chocolate surrogate for its chocolate flavour. Reference can be found in the Bible as Saint John Baptist used to eat it and so the Carob sometime is referred to as Saint John's Bread.
